Steps to Take to Become a CFI

Outline:

  1. Introduction

    • Focus on taking a structured approach to avoid wasting time.

    • Outlines the journey to becoming a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI).

  2. Why Become a CFI?

    • Lower personal flying costs.

    • Build flying hours.

    • Become part of the teaching community.

  3. Can You Make Real Money?

    • Starting Pay: Typically, CFIs start earning $25-$35/hour while building hours.

    • Higher Pay: After gaining experience (1000+ hours) or specializing in a niche, CFIs can earn $80-$130/hour.

  4. How Much Will It Cost?

    • Estimated cost: $6,000 - $11,000, depending on qualifications and preparation.

    • Cost-saving tips: Combine Commercial and CFI training, complete spin training at your current location, and start practicing teaching with an Advanced Ground Instructor (AGI) certification.

  5. Eligibility Requirements

    • Must be at least 18 years old.

    • Hold a Commercial Pilot Certificate and Instrument Rating.

    • Ground instruction from an authorized instructor on:

      • Fundamentals of Instructing (FOI).

      • Aeronautical knowledge for Recreational, Private, and Commercial pilots.

    • Flight training from an authorized instructor.

    • Spin endorsement required.

    • No specific aeronautical experience hours needed (except 15 hours as PIC in Category/Class).

  6. Why Avoid a “Two-Year” CFI for Sign-Off

    • Limited teaching experience, mostly with student and private pilots.

    • Lack of knowledge in more advanced topics like the FOI.

  7. Structured Approach to Becoming a CFI

    • Step 1: Complete an online 42-hour course covering fundamental teaching concepts.

    • Step 2: Participate in a 7-day immersion class, which includes 40 hours of ground training and use of technology like Zoom and ForeFlight.

    • Step 3: Utilize a syllabus, track progress, and practice teaching important concepts like aerodynamics and airspace.

    • Step 4: Complete 15 hours of flight instruction (in the right seat) and individual ground instruction for checkride prep.

  8. Course Duration

    • Online Course: 42 hours, typically completed in two weeks.

    • Immersion Class: 7 days of in-person or remote training (40 hours).

    • Flight Instruction: 15 hours, typically completed within 6 days.

  9. Outcome

    • After completing the structured program, you should be prepared to confidently instruct others from handshake to private pilot certification.

    • Learn how to effectively present lessons and integrate technology into your teaching.

  10. The Full Process

    • Start with a “Getting Started” email, followed by accessing the online course at least two weeks before the 7-day class.

    • Choose either in-person or remote classes, with the checkride taking place at the end of the program.
